First class/private at The Breathing Room?
Please arrive at least 10 minutes early to complete our new client paperwork and to get acquainted with the space before your first session.
What should I wear and bring?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely and bring a reusable water bottle. For Pilates Equipment classes please wear Pilates socks. You are also welcome to bring your own Pilates loops. We provide mats, props, loops, towels, and a water fountain to fill up your water bottle. Pilates socks and loops are available for purchase at the front desk.
Why do I have to wear Pilates socks during Pilates Equipment classes/privates?
We require Pilates socks for a two reasons. Hygiene is the first reason. Even if your feet are clean, not everyone’s feet are as pristine. We wipe down the equipment after every session, but wearing socks helps maintain the cleanliness of the equipment and therefore your hands and feet. The second reason is safety. Pilates socks have a rubbery material on the sole that ensure a non-slip experience during your Pilates session.
What should I expect during my private Pilates session?
During your 50-minute, private Pilates session, you will be taught one-on-one with a Certified Pilates Instructor. In your first session, you will begin by discussing your specific needs and goals with the instructor. Then the instructor will breakdown and guide you through various exercises on the apparatus. As you continue with private sessions, you will gradually develop strength and control, helping your body move in the most efficient and beneficial way possible.
Can I take group Pilates Equipment classes as a beginner?
We suggest that you take a private Pilates session before starting group equipment classes. This ensures you are familiar with the equipment and basic movements for your own safety.
What is the difference between Pilates and Yoga?
Both Pilates and Yoga are forms of exercise that focus on strength, balance, flexibility, and coordination within the body.
Pilates was first developed in the 1920’s for physical rehabilitation by Joseph Pilates. It focuses on stabilizing the core to help improve posture, develop balance, and help the body move with more overall ease. Pilates focuses on form and quality rather than quantity. In addition to exercises on a mat, Pilates also includes exercises on special machines.
Yoga first arose thousands of years ago in India. Its purpose was to help connect the individual consciousness to the universal consciousness through movement, breath, and meditation. By linking movement with breath, you can begin to calm the mind.
Through our dedication to our own practices, we have found yoga and Pilates to be complementary, mindful, and breath-based practices that when practiced consistently and with attention and care, yield profound results. The two modalities are a harmonization of strength and flexibility, supporting us to live with stability and ease. They are the foundation of our practice.
